Tutor Tips

#1  Bring a picture of your family to share with your student the first time.

#2  Use the Getting to Know You form in your child's folder to interview them during your first or second session.

#3  Is your student get tired after reading 1-2 stories?  Switch it up!  Do one story, play a game, and then go back and read some more.
Does your child really want to do their "Rocket Words" but nothing else?  Save the Rocket Words until the end of your session.

A basic lesson should include: 10 minutes for reading and rereading Rocket Words, 20 minutes for reading together from the folders, and 20 minutes for the game.

It doesn't matter which order you do it in, just that you practice reading!

#4  When playing the games, make it fun!  If the rules are too confusing, change them!  If you come up with something really good - let me know!  The boxes have pads of paper and pencils in for keeping score, writing down words, etc.  So much learning can occur by exploring the game together or inventing something new to do with it!  Enjoy!

#5  Tutor Tip:  Please ask your child to refrain from eating during tutoring sessions.  No food or drink in the library (my room too).  If you notice that your child has just finished snack, please ask them to make a stop at the bathroom to wash their hands.

#6 have you finished all 10 boxes?  It's time to go back to the beginning and start again.  While it may not seem very exciting to you to repeat the boxes, it's all part of the grand plan!  Your student will benefit from practice and repetition.  You should see some improvement since the last time you did that box.  Playing an old game or reading a known story can be like visiting a favorite friend.  Enjoy!

#7  Books in the activity boxes are just for fun!  For the most part, they are above your child's reading level.  IF they'd like to take turns reading with you, that's fine; however, it's really just for them to listen to you reading it aloud.
